Michels is the 2004 Republican candidate in the 2004 Republican nomination for U.S. Senate from Wisconsin and was running against incumbent Democrat Russ Feingold. Michels lost the primary election, losing to Feingold 55%-44 percent.
In 2004 Michels beat Russ Darrow, Jr. state senator Bob Welch, and attorney Robert Lorge in the Republican primary for the U.S. Senate. He holds the record up to 2010 of having the most votes cast by the position of a Republican during the entire history of Wisconsin.
